Privacy Policy
Last updated: 18 October 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how we use personal information when you use Runese on iPhone, Apple Watch or Android, or visit our website.
Runese is operated by OKD Limited, a company registered in England and Wales under company number 07118986, with its registered office at 50 Princes Street, Ipswich, England, IP1 1RJ, United Kingdom.
For data-protection purposes, OKD Limited is responsible for the personal information processed through Runese.
1. Information we collect
Depending on how you use Runese, we may collect:
- your name, email address and account information, including your Apple ID identifier if you use Sign in with Apple, or your Google account ID if you sign in with Google;
- your answers when you set up a plan, such as your running experience, goal, race date and the days you can train;
- runs you record or import, including date, duration, distance, pace, GPS route, average heart rate, and any name, description or private notes you add;
- your highest recorded heart rate, which we use to set your heart-rate zones;
- your device type, app version, time zone, IP address and push notification token;
- how you use the app, such as which onboarding steps you complete, using a random app ID created on your device (not your device's advertising ID);
- diagnostic and security information, including crash reports from the Android app;
- subscription and purchase information from Apple or Google Play (not your card details);
- bank details you give us so we can pay Referrals Plus commission (the account holder's full name or company name, currency, IBAN, account number and sort code); and
- information you provide when contacting us.
If payments are handled by Apple, Google or another payment provider, they may process your payment details directly. We normally receive information about the purchase rather than your full card details.
2. How we use your information
We use personal information to:
- create and manage your account;
- provide Runese and its features;
- process and manage purchases or subscriptions;
- pay Referrals Plus commission;
- keep Runese secure and prevent fraud or misuse;
- fix problems and improve the Service;
- provide customer support;
- communicate important information about your account or Runese; and
- comply with our legal obligations.
Where applicable, we process information because it is necessary to provide the Service to you, because we have a legitimate interest in operating and securing Runese, because the law requires us to, or because you have given us consent.
3. iPhone: Apple Health, location, calendar and motion
This section covers the iPhone and Apple Watch app. Section 4 covers Android. All of these are optional. You can change or withdraw permission at any time in Profile or in iOS Settings.
Apple Health. With your permission, Runese reads your running workouts (including route and heart rate), heart rate, steps, and walking and running distance, and saves the runs you record in Runese to Apple Health. Runs imported from Apple Health are stored with your Runese account so we can show your history, update your race predictions and adjust your plan. Step and distance totals stay on your device and are used only to show your daily progress. We never use Apple Health data for advertising or marketing, we never sell it, and we never store it in iCloud. We share it only with the providers that host Runese on our behalf.
Location. Runese uses your location only while you are recording a run, to measure distance and pace and draw your route. It keeps tracking while the screen is locked for as long as the run lasts, and iOS shows a location indicator during that time. Runese never asks for “Always” access and does not track you when you are not recording. The route is saved with the run on our servers and, if you turn Strava sync on, sent to Strava.
Calendar. If you turn on calendar sync, Runese adds your planned runs to the calendar you choose and removes them when you turn sync off. Calendar data stays on your device and is never sent to us.
Motion. For treadmill runs, Runese uses your iPhone's motion sensors to estimate distance. This data stays on your device.
Strava. When you connect Strava, you sign in on Strava and choose to allow Runese to upload activities to your Strava account. Runese asks only for Strava's basic profile access and permission to upload. It does not read your activities, routes, followers or any other Strava data. The access tokens Strava issues are stored in your device's secure keychain (on Android, in encrypted storage on your phone), not on our servers; our servers only pass them between your device and Strava when you connect or when a token is refreshed, and do not keep them. When you save a run with Strava sync turned on, the run's name, description, start time and GPS route are sent directly from your device to Strava. Once uploaded, that activity is held by Strava under Strava's privacy policy, and deleting it in Runese does not delete it from Strava.
When you disconnect Strava in Runese, we delete the tokens from your device and ask Strava to revoke Runese's access. You can also revoke access at any time in your Strava settings under My Apps.
4. Android: Health Connect, sign-in, purchases and permissions
This section covers the Runese Android app. Health Connect, location, calendar and notifications are all optional. You can change or withdraw permission at any time in Runese, in Health Connect or in Android Settings.
Health Connect
With your permission, Runese reads and writes the data types below in Health Connect. We ask only for what Runese needs.
Data Runese reads
- Exercise sessions: your runs and treadmill runs, with their start time, duration and title. We use them to show your history, match runs to your plan, update your race predictions and adjust your plan. Other kinds of workout are ignored.
- Distance: the distance of each run.
- Heart rate: the average heart rate of each run, and the readings during a run, to show your heart-rate chart and zones.
- Exercise routes: the GPS route of each run, to draw your map and work out your splits.
- Steps: your daily step totals, to show your progress against your daily step goal.
Data Runese writes. Exercise sessions, distance and exercise routes for runs you record in Runese, so other apps you allow can see them. Runese writes each run once, and only runs from the last 30 days, so connecting does not copy your whole history.
Reading in the background. If you allow it, Runese reads Health Connect in the background about every 6 hours. Runs from your watch then reach Runese and update your plan without you opening the app.
Runese only imports runs recorded by Runese or by your phone's or watch's own health app (Google Fit, Fitbit or Samsung Health). The first time you connect, it looks back 30 days.
Where it is stored. Imported runs (date, duration, distance, average heart rate and route) are stored with your Runese account on our servers, so they can update your plan and predictions. Step totals and the heart-rate readings during a run stay on your phone and are not sent to us.
How we protect it. We never sell Health Connect data. We never use it for advertising or marketing, or to decide whether you can get credit, insurance or a job. We do not share it with third parties, except as needed to provide the features you use: the providers that host Runese on our behalf (see section 5), and Strava when you choose to send a run there. We may also disclose it where the law requires. People at Runese do not read it unless you ask us to for support, or it is needed for security or to comply with the law.
The use of information received from Health Connect will adhere to the Health Connect Permissions policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
You can change what Runese can read or write at any time in Health Connect, or disconnect it in Runese. Deleting your account deletes the runs we imported (see section 8). Runs Runese wrote to Health Connect stay there until you delete them in Health Connect.
Signing in with Google
If you choose to continue with Google, Android's Credential Manager asks Google for a sign-in token. Our servers check that token with Google and receive your name, email address and Google account ID. We use them only to create your account and sign you in. We never see your Google password or anything else in your Google account.
Purchases through Google Play
On Android, Runese Pro is billed through Google Play. Google handles your payment details. When you subscribe, the app sends us the purchase token Google issues, and our servers verify it with Google before unlocking Pro. Google also tells us when a subscription renews, is cancelled or is refunded. We store the subscription status, product, dates and purchase token with your account.
Location
Runese uses your location only while you are recording a run, to measure distance and pace and draw your route. Recording runs as a foreground service, so it keeps going when the screen is off, and Android shows a Runese notification for as long as the run lasts. Runese does not ask for background location and does not track you when you are not recording. The route is saved with the run on our servers and, if you turn Strava sync on, sent to Strava.
Physical activity, calendar and notifications
Physical activity. For treadmill runs, Runese uses your phone's step counter to estimate distance. This data stays on your phone.
Calendar. If you turn on calendar sync, Runese adds your planned runs to the calendar you choose and removes them when you turn sync off. Calendar data stays on your phone and is never sent to us.
Notifications. Push notifications are delivered through Google Firebase Cloud Messaging, using a push token for your phone.
Crash reports
The Android app uses Google Firebase Crashlytics to tell us when it crashes. A crash report includes what went wrong in the app, your phone model, Android version, app version and a random installation ID. It does not include your health data or location. We use crash reports only to fix problems.
5. Sharing your information
We do not sell your personal information and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
We share it only with providers that help us run Runese. They process it on our instructions and must protect it to the same standard we do:
- Amazon Web Services (servers and database, in Ireland);
- Google Firebase Cloud Messaging (delivering push notifications);
- Google Firebase Crashlytics (crash reports from the Android app);
- Mailgun (sending sign-in codes and account emails);
- Apple (Sign in with Apple, payments and subscriptions); and
- Google (sign in with Google, and Google Play payments and subscriptions).
Referrals Plus. If someone signs up with your referral code, you will see their display name in your Referrals Plus dashboard. If you sign up with someone's code, they will see your display name.
We may also disclose information where required by law or where reasonably necessary to protect Runese, our users or our legal rights.
6. International data
Runese is available internationally and some of our service providers may operate in different countries.
Where personal information is transferred internationally, we use appropriate legal safeguards where required by applicable data-protection law.
7. Tracking
Runese does not track you across other companies' apps or websites. It contains no advertising code and does not use your device's advertising identifier, on iPhone or Android.
To understand how people use Runese, such as where they stop during onboarding and how many people use it each day, the app sends us simple usage events (for example “opened the app” or “finished the goal step”) with a random app ID created on your device. Once you sign in, these are linked to your account. This usage data stays with Runese: we don't share it, we don't use it for advertising, and we don't link it with data from other companies' apps or websites. Deleting your account deletes it.
When you follow a runese.com/go/ link, we count the visit. We record the country, browser type and referring page, but not your IP address. To count unique visitors we use a code that changes every day and cannot identify you.
8. How long we keep information and deleting your account
We keep your information while you have an account, and only for as long as reasonably necessary to provide Runese, meet our legal obligations and protect the Service.
Deleting your account. You can delete your account at any time in the app, on iPhone or Android, under Profile → Manage account → Delete account. You can also ask us by email. How to delete your account. This immediately and permanently deletes your account, plan, runs, routes, notes, heart-rate data, predictions, referral records, subscription records, bank details, devices and push tokens. We also revoke Sign in with Apple, and Runese data stored on your device is removed. Copies in our encrypted backups and server logs are erased within 7 days.
Deleting your account does not cancel an App Store subscription (cancel it in your Apple ID settings), and does not remove runs Runese saved to Apple Health or uploaded to Strava (delete those in the Health app or on Strava). Apple keeps its own records of your purchases.
On Android, deleting your account does not cancel a Google Play subscription (cancel it in the Play Store under Payments & subscriptions), and does not remove runs Runese saved to Health Connect or uploaded to Strava. Google keeps its own records of your purchases.
9. Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights over your personal information.
These may include rights to:
- access your information;
- correct inaccurate information;
- request deletion;
- restrict or object to certain uses;
- receive certain information in a portable format;
- withdraw consent; and
- opt out of marketing.
You can delete your account and data yourself in the app at any time (see section 8). To exercise any other privacy right, contact us using the details below.
We may need to verify your identity before completing a request.
10. Notifications and marketing
If you allow notifications, we send reminders about your planned sessions, alerts when a new run arrives from Apple Health, and messages about your plan and Runese Pro, such as when a free trial is ending. You choose which of these you get under Profile → Notifications, and you can turn all notifications off in iOS Settings → Runese → Notifications, or on Android in Settings → Apps → Runese → Notifications.
If we send optional marketing emails, every one includes an unsubscribe link.
You may still receive necessary messages relating to your account, purchases, security or changes to the Service.
11. Security
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures designed to protect your personal information.
However, no online service can guarantee absolute security, and you should keep your account credentials secure.
12. Children
Runese is intended for users aged 18 and over and we do not knowingly allow children under 18 to create accounts.
13. Privacy complaints
If you have a concern about how we use your personal information, please contact us and we will investigate it.
You can contact us electronically at hello@runese.com.
If UK data-protection law applies, you may also make a complaint to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
Users in other countries may also have the right to contact their local privacy or data-protection regulator.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy when Runese, our technology or applicable laws change.
If a change is significant, we will provide additional notice where required.
The latest version will always show the date it was last updated.
